Should I upgrade to E-Prime 2.0 Professional SP2 and E-Prime Extensions for Tobii 2.0 (2.0.2.50)?
When collecting data for an ongoing study, the impact that potential changes to the study procedure could have on data collection should be considered carefully. Upgrades to the stimulus presentation software are no exception. Therefore, we typically recommend that the version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional and E-Prime Extensions for Tobii remain consistent throughout the data collection portion of the study. However, there are options available to you if you need to use the same computer for data collection of an ongoing study with your current version of E-Prime, and new experiment development with a different version of E-Prime. It is possible to install multiple versions of the E-Prime 2.0 Professional Subject Station/Run-Time on the same computer that has E-Prime 2.0 Professional SP2 installed. With additional changes to the E-Prime Extensions for Tobii 2.0 installation (contact Product Service & Support for details) this configuration allows compiled .ebs2 files to be run for data collection, permitting semi-concurrent use of an older version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional for data collection and development of new experiments with E-Prime 2.0 SP2 and compatible version of E-Prime Extensions for Tobii 2.0.
When designing a new study, it is recommended to use the latest versions of E-Prime 2.0 Professional and E-Prime Extensions for Tobii. This allows for implementation of the improved feature set, stability, and support for current Tobii Eye trackers.
When upgrading a Tobii enabled experiment .es2 file from an older version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional (e.g., 2.0.8.90) to E-Prime 2.0 Professional SP2 (i.e., 2.0.10.356), most experiment settings will remain intact. For a listing of changes when upgrading experiments please see RELEASE INFO: Upgrading experiments to E-Prime 2.0 [19026].
What else should I consider when upgrading older experiments to a newer version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional SP2 and E-Prime Extensions for Tobii 2.0?
It is important to examine the structure of your experiment and determine if any critical stimulus presentation are followed by InLine objects. E-Prime 2.0 SP2 introduces different default values for many object parameters to improve timing consistency and efficiency. One new default is for PreRelease, which defaults to "(same as duration)" in E-Prime 2.0. This new default value can alter the expected timing behavior of the experiment from previous versions. For example, it might result in the subsequent InLine executing sooner than you may want. To overcome this, insert TET_HandlePreRelease at the top of any InLine to absorb the PreRelease value and properly handle and log responses. This step is internally handled by any TET/ClearView related PackageCall object used in the experiment as a new optional parameter (vHandlePreRelease) has been added to many routines and defaults to True (yes, handle the PreRelease).
Also, experiments that use the E-Prime Extensions for Tobii 2.0 CVSendLogEvent and CVSendGenericEvent PackageCalls to generate and send event markers to Tobii Studio (legacy ClearView) software no longer require use of the PackageCall objects to send the event markers. Using the Task Events feature of E-Prime 2.0, sending markers to Tobii Studio can be achieved without the use of PackageCalls. This method sends the markers at the Onset time of the object in the trial, which allows for a more accurate representation of E-Prime events in Tobii Studio. For more info on using Task Events to send markers to Tobii Studio, please see the E-Prime Extensions for Tobii documentation.
Can more than one version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional and E-Prime Extensions for Tobii 2.0 be installed on the same computer?
Yes, but special steps must be taken to do so. Only one complete installation of E-Prime 2.0 Professional and E-Prime Extensions for Tobii 2.0 can be installed on the same machine at one time. However, with the special configuration described above you can run already generated .ebs2 files from another version on the same computer as a machine that has E-Prime 2.0 and the compatible E-Prime Extensions for Tobii version installed. You will not be able to edit the older versions of the .es2 file without converting them to the fully installed version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional. However, the StartupInfo feature allow for limited customizations to the experiment ebs2 files; see OVERVIEW: Modifying StartupInfo using StartupInfo Editor [22727] for details.
NOTE: Please watch E-Prime 2.0: Adding EET Package Calls for adding EET PackageCalls in E-Prime 2.0.
