The Anti-Saccade (AS) task tests injury or dysfunction of the frontal lobe by assessing the brain’s ability to inhibit the reflexive saccade because saccadic eye movement is primarily controlled by the frontal cortex.
Abstract
In this version of the Anti-Saccade task, a fixation (i.e., +) appears in the center of the screen for either 1 or 2 seconds. After the fixation disappears, an asterisk (*) quickly appears to the left or right side of the screen. Then, a target (either an O or a Q) immediately appears on the opposite side from the asterisk and is quickly covered up by a pattern (i.e., ##). When the asterisk appears, particpants need to quickly look away from it to see what target is presented (i.e., either O or Q). Participants need to classify the target as either an O or a Q by responding with the appropriate key on the keyboard.
NOTE: Because this task measures saccadic eye movements, it can be modified to use one of E-Prime's eye tracking extensions (i.e., Tobii Pro, EyeLink, SMI, and SmartEye). Please refer to the specific documentation on those Extensions in order to enable eye tracking.
