The Attention Network Task (ANT) is a task which measures alerting, orienting, and executive control in participants.

Abstract

In the task, participants are asked to indicate which direction a central arrow is pointing. 3 trial types are possible: congruent (e.g., <<<<<), incongruent (e.g., >><>>), or neutral (e.g., 00<00). During the trials, a fixation is present in the center of the display. The arrows are presented either above or below the fixation.

Additionally, on some trials a star (*) is flashed on the screen briefly. If the star is presented above the fixation, then the arrows appear above the fixation. If the star is presented below, then the arrows appear below. A star in the center of the screen indicates that the arrows may appear above or below the fixation.
