NOTE: While this article points to resources specific to COVID-19, these instructions represent PST's general recommendations for cleaning and disinfecting its hardware products.
General instructions:
The CDC's Detailed Disinfection Guidance points to the EPA's list of Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Take care to avoid certain types of disinfectants/cleaners for hardware products with painted surfaces. Continue reading for product specific instructions.
- Apply the cleaner to the surface and wipe it off within some small amount of time so that it does not puddle on components for long periods of time.
- Do not immerse any electronic/fiberoptic components or cables in liquids, as they are not waterproof. In environments where the equipment occasionally encounters biological fluid or tissue, follow your organization’s procedures for proper cleaning and disinfection.
- Wear face masks while operating the hardware products and have your participants wear face masks as well.
- Do not use the hardware products on participants who test positive for COVID-19 or exhibit COVID-19 symptoms.
Simulator, mock head coil and MR Safe Vision Correct Lens-specific instructions:
- Clean all external surfaces of the Simulator and Mock Head Coil between participants with a disinfectant spray cleaner or wipe. If you use a spray, wipe it down afterward with a soft, clean cloth that will not cause any scratches.
- Do not use organic solvents in full concentration such as acetone, mineral spirits, high concentration isopropyl alcohol, etc. They can damage some paint and plastic surfaces.
- Use Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, Simple Green, Windex with vinegar, 409, or Mr. Clean as they are suitable cleaners that do not strip any paint from the Simulator. If you identify an alternative disinfectant/cleaner (with a non-organic-solvent active ingredient) beyond this list, be sure to first use it on a relatively inconspicuous, small test area first. Please allow for some time to pass to conclude that it is not causing discoloration or any other noticeable damage.
- Do not use harsh chemicals such as ammonia, acetone, and isopropyl alcohol on the vision correction lenses themselves to avoid damaging the antireflective coating. Use a mild dish soap and microfiber clothe. The same concern does not apply to the frames.
MoTrak-specific instructions:
- Clean the electronics unit, transmitter, sensor, and cables between subjects. Wipe with a cloth and a cleaning solution such as mild soap and water, isopropyl alcohol, or a similar solution according to your organization’s standards.
- Wipe the sensor with a disinfecting wipe and change the headbands (the system comes with 10) between participants, then wash the bands in soap and water before their next use.
NOTE: The electronics unit, transmitters, and sensors cannot be subject to autoclaving or gamma radiation. Sensors withstand Ethylene Oxide (EtO) Sterilization.
WARNING: Proper care should be taken when using cleaning products and disinfectants. PST accepts no liability for improper use and procedures. PST advises individuals to follow your institution's guidelines as well as The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)'s recommendations found here: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/disinfectant/default.html.
