The Word Fluency Task is used to test executive dysfunction.

Abstract

This experiment is a variation of the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT). The letters F, A, and S are each displayed randomly for 1 minute. Participants are asked to create as many words as possible beginning with the letter specified in the given time period.

Performance of the task reflects the integrity of the semantic system, retrieval strategies, self-monitoring, and inhibition of inappropriate responses. Responses are made with the keyboard.
