E-Prime 3.0
E-Prime 2.0
Detail
This article is meant to provide helpful information and resources to users who are working with E-Prime for the first time.
Installed Resources
A Getting Started Guide is installed with both E-Prime 3.0 and E-Prime 2.0. This manual provides information on the E-Prime experiment design environment, E-Studio, and the data analysis applications E-Merge and E-DataAid. Additionally, information on best practices and other help resources are available in the Guide.
The Getting Started Guide is available as a .pdf file upon installing E-Prime. You can find the Getting Started Guide under either the E-Prime 3.0 or E-Prime 2.0 folder in the Start Menu. We recommend reading and printing the manual before programming your first experiment in E-Prime.
Also installed with the E-Prime system are sample experiments that depict how to incorporate elements such as images, sounds, and videos in your experiment. The article GETTING STARTED: Sample Experiments [23971] lists the experiments and locations for E-Prime 3.0.
NOTE: E-Prime 2.0 contains the same Samples except for BasicButtonRT, Survey1, and Survey2; these three samples incorporate SlideButton functionality that is only available in E-Prime 3.0. Additionally, the E-Prime 2.0 sample experiments are installed to the folder ...Documents\My Experiments\Samples.
Tutorial experiments are installed with E-Prime. E-Prime 3.0 contains a starting point named "AdvancedTutorialStart.es3" for completing these Tutorials (...Documents\My Experiments\3.0\Tutorials). The following articles contain pdfs that guide you through the Tutorials:
- E-STUDIO: Advanced Tutorial: Images [23803]
- E-STUDIO: Advanced Tutorial: Sound [23804]
- E-STUDIO: Advanced Tutorial: Movies [23805]
- E-STUDIO: Advanced Tutorial: Using E-Basic Script [23806]
NOTE: If you do not want to overwrite AdvancedTutorialStart.es3, save the experiment under a different name before you begin the Tutorials.
The same Tutorials exist for E-Prime 2.0 as well. However, the information to guide you through the Tutorials is located in the Getting Started Guide rather than in the pdfs that are provided in E-Prime 3.0.
Product Service and Support Knowledge Base Resources
Due to users' requests for online documentation, the E-Prime 3.0 User Manual is provided as an online resource. It can be found under the Documentation Articles area on our Product Service and Support site.
Users who wish to view the Documentation Articles should start with the Overview articles. The Overview articles contain links to other topics that highlight the features and functionality of the E-Prime system. Please see the links below to the Overview article of each of the 9 different categories in the Documentation Articles:

NOTE: In E-Prime 2.0, the information presented in the Documentation Articles can be found in the New Features - Reference Guide and the User Guide.
Psychology Software Tools provides a library of pre-programmed experiments. The Experiment Library contains full experiments of common psychological paradigms (e.g., Stroop Task) that can be downloaded and run as is. In addition, the support site also hosts Sample experiments that highlight specific E-Prime features and functionality. The Sample experiments are not offered as complete experiments and are not intended for data collection. To access the Experiment Library and Sample Experiments, navigate to the Support page and scroll down to the "Experiment Articles" section.
NOTE: The Experiment Library is a feature of E-Prime 3.0 only.

E-Basic Script Resources
E-Basic is a standard object-oriented programming language with over 800 commands which has been customized to better fit the needs of E-Prime real-time research. Some of the E-Basic commands were specially developed by PST to accommodate the unique requirements of behavioral research. The E-Basic Script Resources contain examples that can be used in experiments to highlight the functionality of the E-Basic syntax.
In E-Prime 3.0, E-Basic syntax can be found online in the E-Prime Command Reference. The E-Prime Command Reference is launched through the Help menu in E-Studio or by using the link to the website (https://pstnet.com/ecr).
In E-Prime 2.0, E-Basic syntax can be found in E-Basic Help. E-Basic Help can be accessed through the Start Menu under the E-Prime 2.0 folder.
The E-Primer
The E-Primer is an book written by Michiel Spapé, Henk van Steenbergen, Rinus Verdonschot, and Saskia van Dantzig. The E-Primer provides an introduction into a wide range of experiments that can be set up using E-Prime. The book can be found on their website: www.e-primer.com.
