Should I upgrade to E-Prime 2.0 Professional SP1 and E-Prime Extensions for fMRI 2.0 (2.0.7.39)?
When designing a new study, we recommended that the latest versions of E-Prime 2.0 Professional and E-Prime Extensions for fMRI be used. However, when collecting data for an ongoing study, the impact that potential changes to the study procedure could have on data collection should be considered carefully. Upgrades to the stimulus presentation software are no exception. Therefore, we typically recommend that the version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional and E-Prime Extensions for fMRI remain consistent throughout the data collection portion of the study. Further, given the likelihood that fMRI users are likely to be operating in a shared laboratory environment, you must consider the impact that an upgrade to E-Prime and EEfMRI will have on colleagues who are running experiments with a prior version. All of the following factors must be understood:
- E-Prime 2.0.8.90a and E-Prime 2.0.10.353 SP1 can NOT be fully installed side-by-side on the same machine. Therefore, upgrading to E-Prime 2.0 SP1 on a machine that is currently running 2.0.8.90a results in the removal of 2.0.8.90a from the machine.
- Different versions of a package file can NOT be installed side-by-side on the same machine. Therefore, upgrading to EEfMRI 2.0.7.39 results in the removal of EEfMRI 2.0.4.6 from the machine.
- The Subject Station/Run Time for 2.0.8.90a can NOT be installed when upgrading to the SP1 release. This means that you can NOT use the same computer for data collection of an ongoing study with E-Prime 2.0.8.90a that incorporates package file calls from EEfMRI 2.0.4.6 while at the same time performing new experiment development and/or data collection with SP1. Therefore, you should only upgrade your E-Prime version to E-Prime 2.0 Professional SP1 (v2.0.10.353) and your E-Prime Extensions for fMRI to v2.0.7.39 after careful consultation with the other E-Prime users at your facility. Once you have updated your experiment-running machine to E-Prime 2.0 SP1 and EEfMRI 2.0.7.39, you are committing all of your colleagues who utilize this machine to using these versions. When upgrading an existing EEfMRI-enabled experiment .es2 file from an older version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional (such as v2.0.8.90) to E-Prime 2.0 Professional SP1 (v2.0.10.353), most experiment settings will remain intact.
What else should I consider when upgrading older experiments to a newer version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional SP1 and E-Prime Extensions for EEfMRI 2.0?
It is important to examine the structure of your experiment and determine if any critical stimulus presentation are followed by InLine objects. E-Prime 2.0 SP1 introduces different default values for many object parameters to improve timing consistency and efficiency. One new default is for PreRelease, which defaults to '(same as duration)' in E-Prime 2.0 SP1. This new default value can alter the expected timing behavior of the experiment from previous versions. For example, it might result in the subsequent InLine executing sooner than you may want. To overcome this, many of the PackageCall routines include a new optional parameter (vHandlePreRelease) which defaults to 'True' ('yes, handle the PreRelease').
Can more than one version of E-Prime 2.0 Professional and E-Prime Extensions for fMRI be installed on the same computer?
No; as explained above, only one complete installation of E-Prime 2.0 Professional and E-Prime Extensions for fMRI can be installed on the same machine at one time. Any user with a critical need to collect data with both EEfMRI v2.0.4.6 and EEfMRI 2.0.7.39 must contact PST support to explore possible alternative options. Such users should create a support request by visiting the Product Support and Services site and click on the "Submit A Request" link.
If you are interested in information on how to configure your computer for a Subject Station installation of E-Prime v2.0.8.90 along with a full installation of E-Prime 2.0 SP1 (v2.0.10.353), please create a support request by visiting the Product Support and Services site and click on the "Submit A Request" link.
