This article provides background information to consider before installing an E-Prime or Runtime license. Specific installation steps are described in INSTALL: Installation, Updates, and Upgrades [22670]).
E-Prime License Installation Options
The first screen that appears after launching the E-Prime installer prompts to perform either an E-Prime Suite or Subject Station installation:
The E-Prime serial number may, but is not required to, be specified during installation. If the serial number is not specified during installation then it must be entered during Registration and Validation (for a Suite installation) or when launching E-Run for the first time (when selecting a Subject Station installation from an E-Prime license or installing a Runtime license). Selecting the Suite installation option results in a second prompt to perform either a Complete or Custom installation.
Suite Installation - Complete Option
The Complete Suite option installs all the applications listed below:
Application | Use | Relevant Input File(s) | More Information |
E-Studio | Creation or modification of experiment specifications, Generation of .ebs3 files | Experiment Specification (.es3) | OVERVIEW: Experiment Design Using E-Studio [23282] |
E-Run | Stimulus presentation, Data collection, Demonstration | E-Basic Script (.ebs3) | OVERVIEW: Using E-Run [23287] |

E-DataAid | Examination, Analysis, Export, Regeneration of tables or analyses | Data Files (.edat3, .emrg3) Analysis Files (.anl) | OVERVIEW: Data Handling Using E-DataAid [23284] |
E-Recovery | Conversion of E-Run text files to .edat3 files | Text data files (.txt) generated by E-Run | OVERVIEW: Using E-Recovery [23288] |
Factor Table Wizard | Stimulus List creation (How To: Factor Table Wizard) | none | EXPERIMENT DESIGN: Factor Table Wizard [37343] |
Codec Config | Configuration of codecs necessary to play movies | Movie and audio files | EXPERIMENT DESIGN: Codec Config [22687] |

Suite Installation - Custom Installation
The Custom Suite installation provides the ability to choose which of the applications listed in the table above will be included during installation. Although used rarely, this installation option reduces the number of applications that are installed and may be useful when there is limited space available on the computer’s hard drive. For example, if developing an experiment is the only utility needed, then the E-Studio application should be selected but the E-Merge application could potentially be skipped. Selecting the E-Run application only is equivalent to performing a Subject Station installation or installing a Runtime license (see below), and the E-Prime Analysis and Data File Utilities option is ideal for just merging and analyzing data.
During installation, the installation program prompts the user for the specific applications to be installed. Check all the applications to be installed, and leave unwanted applications unchecked. The Description field lists the components included with a selected option. The amount of space required by an installation option and the amount of space available on the machine are displayed below the checklist.
Subject Station Installation
The Subject Station installation requires a smaller footprint than the Suite installation. The Subject Station installation supplies only those applications needed to run experiments and collect data. This option does not permit the development of new programs, the generation of .ebs3 files from Experiment Specification (.es3) files, or the examination of data files in E-DataAid. The Subject Station installation may be installed on up to 25 machines in a lab in order to collect data from more than one participant at a time. Refer to the End User License Agreement (EULA) for additional information regarding the use of the Subject Station installation.
The Subject Station Installation process must be repeated on each data collection machine. The following applications are installed with a Subject Station installation:
- E-Run
- Codec Config
- Sound Tester
- StartupInfo Editor
The E-Run application does not require a USB License Key or Cloud License.
NOTE: PST strongly recommends that a test session is run after performing a Subject Station installation prior to attempting to run actual participants. For more information on preparing a data collection machine, see ERROR: Basic Troubleshooting for Subject Station or Runtime Machines [34476].
Runtime Only Installation
A Runtime Only installation option is available with a Runtime license. A Runtime license is required when collecting data at a site other than where the full E-Prime 3.0 system is licensed (e.g., multi-site study and in labs with an E-Prime license that have over 25 machines (maximum of 100 machines). The following applications are installed with a Runtime Only installation:
- E-Run
- Codec Config
- Sound Tester
- StartupInfo Editor
The E-Run application does not require a USB License Key or Cloud License.

The final Note seems a bit ambiguous. First it says that all previous Runtime installations must be uninstalled, then it says that "side by side multiple Subject Station *can* be set up with a Runtime Only installation" (emphasis mine). Did you perhaps mean, "side by side multiple Subject Station *cannot* be set up with a Runtime Only installation"? Please clarify.
I have never found a reason to do a Subject Station installation. To the contrary, over the years I have found problems with Subject Station installations that were solved simply by doing a complete installation. Users who have a full license should always do a full installation, you will have fewer problems and more flexibility as then any workstation can become a development station simply by moving the hardware key.
