E-Prime contains the StartupInfo Editor application, which can be used to create and modify StartupInfo files; which are XML-based documents used to load name/value pairs into the Context object of an experiment. StartupInfo files are helpful if you have a set of properties that should be used for specific experiments. For example using .startupInfo3 allows you to alter .ebs3 behavior without regenerating the .es3 file.
About the StartupInfo Editor
The StartupInfo Editor facilitates the creation and modification of StartupInfo (*startupinfo3) files- XML-based documents used for loading name/value pairs into the Context object for use during an experiment. There are two types of StartupInfo files, global and local:
- Global StartupInfo files (located in the My Experiments\3.0 folder) load name/value pairs into any experiment that is run on the machine (e.g. to use the same Display device resolution for all experiments).
- Local StartupInfo files (located in the same folder as the *.es3 or *.ebs3 file that will use them) load name/value pairs into only the experiment that they are associated with (e.g., to increment the Subject number used for a particular experiment each time it is run).
The StartupInfo Editor features standard interface characteristics, including menus and toolbars. It also follows a single document model, meaning that only one StartupInfo file can be open for editing at a time. Refer to GENERAL: StartupInfo Editor Interface for detailed information concerning the StarupInfo Editor Interface.
Launching the StartupInfo Editor
The StartupInfo Editor application can be launched from the E-Prime 3.0 folder on the Windows Start menu or via the Tools menu in E-Studio. Either of these methods will open the StartupInfo Editor application with an empty StartupInfo (*.startupinfo3) file not yet associated with an *.es3 file.
The preferred method is to launch the StartupInfo Editor from the StartupInfo tab in the Experiment Object's Property Pages, under the External StartupInfo Parameters section. This will ensure that the appropriate StartupInfo files are opened. Two options are available: Edit Local Values and Edit Global Values. Clicking on Edit Local Values will launch the StartupInfo Editor with the associated StartupInfo file loaded (i.e., the StartupInfo file that will be used with the currently open *.es3 or *.ebs3 file). Clicking on Edit Global Values will launch the StartupInfo Editor with the Global.startupinfo file loaded.
NOTE: Global.startupinfo is used with all *.es3 or *.ebs3 files and is located in the My Experiments folder.
