I think the thing I was most looking forward to in 2.0 is the ability to copy elements between experiments. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be working. I'm using 32-bit Vista and trying to copy a slide from the browser of one experiment to another... and no luck. Any ideas?

You should be able to perform edit or context menu, toolbar, or standard shortcut keys (Ctrl+C Ctrl+V) to copy and paste objects from the Browser in this manner.  Do the copy/paste options appear on the context menu when you try this or are they disabled?  Note that this operation works with two copies of E-Studio 2.x open.  To copy 1.x objects, open the es file in E-Studio 2.x first (you don't have to save it and will keep the original es file in tact).

Please let us know what you find.

Nope, I have two experiments open, go to the browser of one and click on a text display. In the context menu, copy is available as an option, so I select it. I go to the browser of the other experiment, right-click for the context menu. Paste is an option, so I click it--but nothing happens. The slide does not copy. I've tried this in both existing experiments and new empty experiments.

... and this is all in ES2, and I've also tried keyboard shortcuts, selecting Copy/Paste from the Edit menu, etc... This is on Vista Business 32-bit with EP2 RC 2.0.1.103.

Any progress on this issue? Do others have a similar problem?

Same here.

I tried all different kinds of copying (keyboard shortcuts, contextmenu's etc) but *zip*.

This thread is well over a year old... PST is there any news on this matter?

Kind regards,

liwenna

Sigh. So just now I took a look at this myself. For the record, I ran these tests using EP 2.0.8.22 under Vista (I do not, repeat, do not run subjects under Vista, only program development).

We need to pay attention to the source of the copy, the destination of the paste, the method of copy/paste, and the occurrence of name conflicts during the paste, as follows:

Source Copy: Structure, Design (e.g., Procedure), Browser
Destination Paste: Structure, Design (e.g., Procedure), Browser
Method: Drag & Drop, Context (right-click) menu, Edit menu
Name Coflict: absent or present

This gives us 54 cases (not counting all the Paste Conflict possibilities) which PST engineers should have tested for themselves, but as usual I will step into the gap and do this for them (or have they already reported this in a KB that I missed?) (yes, I seriously am a professional faultfinder, every organization should get one). But we may simplify this a little, as follows:

- Drag & Drop works from Structure, Design, and Browser, but only to the Design window of the destination.
- Both Edit > Copy and Context menu > Copy work from Structure and Browser windows; Copy is grayed out in the Design window.
- Both Edit > Paste and Context menu > Paste work in the Structure, Design, and Browser windows, as long as there is no name conflict. (To paste to the Structure window, you must have the Unreferenced E-Objects selected.)
- If an object with the same name already exists in the destination, you will get the Paste Conflict dialog. And here is where the real fun begins...
(pretend that the following is all indented by one tab, I don't know how to format this for this Forum)
- If you use Context menu > Paste in the Structure window and get a Paste Conflict, you also get a little checkbox off to the side that says "Default", and the dialog does not respond to any entries; furthermore, you cannot switch to any other window on the computer until that dialog is dismissed. You can only press Esc to dismiss the dialog.
- Thereafter, further attempts to paste to the Structure or Browser windows will fail until you exit & restart E-Studio. You can still paste to the Design window, but you will get a Paste Conflict dialog even though the earlier paste failed (and even if that used a unique object name).

I'm sure I missed something, but you get the idea.

(Aside to Brandon: This is an example of the sort of documentation I would like to see PST provide for us, instead of me puzzling all this out for myself.)

OK, now somebody has to post this to Web Support to get their attention, and the more of us who do that the better.

New detail: Just noticed that I get that little "Default" stub whenever I use any context-menu selection in the Structure window.

Thanks for your little research and extensive reply David!

Unfortunately my e-prime doesn't do *zip* and at best stalls when I try to copy/paste and object (regardless of method) or crashes when I try to drag/drop between experiments.

Brandon? Could you shed some light on this? Or should I indeed take it to web support?

Best,

liwenna

I'll make an effort to take a look at this shortly, but here are some notes I can make at this time.

1) The "Default" check box item you receive when you right click is a bug.  It should never be seen and has no purpose.
2) There is a known bug (which I belive it was David that reported) in regards to the paste conflict dialog having a typo to what purpose it actually does and has been corrected.
3) I'll specifically try the combinations that David defines, but I am not aware of any cases where the copy/paste dragging behavior does not act as it was intended.  I'll try to confirm this again as soon as over the weekend.
4) A new feature that adds to this has been implemented that if you paste from one E-Studio to there is a set of circumstances and is outlines in KB3360 - FEATURE: Ability to perform deep and shallow copy and paste (paste special) - a bunch of kb topics will be posted soon if this isn't there.
5) If you drag anything other than a procedure onto or near Experiment object, E-Studio will crash.
