We have many users with various vintages of E-Prime 1.x who may need to upgrade to 2.0, and I had real trouble following the price list on the PST web site. With help from PST staff I tried to put the price list into better order, and just in case it helps anybody else I put the result here. Note that version 2.0 has now been split into two "flavors", a "Professsional" model and the basic unnamed model that I will call "non-Professional". (Tip: The following table may look better with a fixed-width font.)

Full price:
Up to 31 Dec 2007
non-Professional $695
Professional $895
After 31 Dec 2007
non-Professional $795
Professional $995

E-Prime 1.x purchases made before 1 Dec 2004 are "non-eligible", which is PST-speak for qualifying for some upgrade pricing but not the best, not to be confused with "full price":
Up to 31 Dec 2007
non-Professional $395
Professional $495
After 31 Dec 2007
non-Professional $495 (still less than full price)
Professional $595 (still less than full price)

E-Prime 1.x purchases made between 1 Dec 2004 and 1 Oct 2007 are "eligible", which is PST-speak for qualifying for the best upgrade pricing (Gary Schrock informs me that "eligible" should be taken to mean "eligible for a 'free' upgrade"):
Up to 31 Dec 2007
Professional $295
After 31 Dec 2007
Professional $395
Up to 1 Apr 2008
non-Professional "Free" (see extended note below)
After 1 Apr 2008
non-Professional $495 (i.e., same as "non-eligible", see above)
Professional $595 (i.e., same as "non-eligible", see above)

The "free" upgrade to non-Pro needs some explanation. You have two choices: (1) Pay shipping to send your 1.x hardware key back to PST, they will exchange it for a special key that allows you to run either 1.x or 2.0 non-Pro on one computer; (2) Pay $30 to have PST send you a new key to run 2.0 non-Pro -- you keep your old 1.x key, allowing you to run both 1.x and 2.0 non-Pro on one or two computers.

That's it. Well, there are also quantity discounts for new (not upgrade) purchases, but this is already complicated enough.

I think most people who upgrade from 1.x to 2.0 non-Pro would pay the $30 for the extra key. But that is academic if most upgraders instead move right up to Professional, which I discuss in a companion post on Pro vs. non-Pro. The "free" upgrade to non-Pro does make it seem that non-Pro is the expected upgrade path from 1.x. However, at this time there are some incompatibilies between programs made with Pro & non-Pro, so you must buy the right version at the outset. According to PST staff I spoke with, the non-Pro version is only meant for those who really are down to their last dollar, everyone else is just supposed to put up the extra money for Pro. As far as I can tell PST does not as a rule offer any way to upgrade from the non-Pro edition to the Pro edition, so if you purchase non-Pro and later realize that you really need Pro then you will be stuck paying full price for a Pro license.

Finally, PST staff stresses that 2.0 is still in rapid development (i.e., 2.0 is not stable), and future revisions of the product may differ from the description above (quite possibly for the better !)

I have included a copy of the table David is referring to above located at http://www.pstnet.com/products/E-Prime/default.htm#Pricing.  For later archival reference, note that pricing and availability subject to change.
As the table and David's summary describes, there are a number of options for purchase and upgrade to E-Prime 2.0 or E-Prime 2.0 Professional.

David McFarlane (11/20/2007)
As far as I can tell PST does not as a rule offer any way to upgrade from the non-Pro edition to the Pro edition, so if you purchase non-Pro and later realize that you really need Pro then you will be stuck paying full price for a Pro license.

If a lab chooses to move to E-Prime 2.0 Professional, they will be able to purchase and upgrade for $495 ($595 after Jan 1 2008).  The process would be identical to an end user whom upgraded from E-Prime 1.x to E-Prime 2.0 Professional.  Because moving to E-Prime 2.0 Professional is a larger investment later, PST Sales and Marketing Staff will be happy to outline the cost benefits choosing E-Prime 2.0 Professional upon initial sale.

In general, PST offers pricing for new systems and discounted pricing for previous purchases.  There are some noted additional complexity in the tables due to the introductory pricing and discount benefits for users whom purchased E-Prime during a promotional period.  PST is open to hearing any suggestions that may assist with outlining the purchasing options that are best for your lab.  PST Sales and Marketing staff (sales@pstnet.com) would be happy to assist labs in determining which edition of E-Prime 2.0 is right for them and provide any assistance with a sales quotation to get that underway.

Information about the promotional eligibility for users that purchased E-Prime 1.x from 12/01/2004 to 10/1/2007 can be found at http://www.pstnet.com/products/e-prime/faq/efaq2.htm#Eligiblity.   To find out if you are part of the eligibility promotion, you can determine from your E-Prime 1.x serial number at http://www.pstnet.com/e-prime/support/EligibleSerialNumberSearch.asp.

Introductory pricing will end at the end of 2007 and E-Prime will have its first price increase in over a decade.

However, at this time there are some incompatibilies between programs made with Pro & non-Pro

There are no expected incompatibilities between versions and I hope that information I responded to at http://www.pstnet.com/forum/Topic884-12-1.aspx and http://www.pstnet.com/forum/Topic914-13-1.aspx have made things clear.

David McFarlane (11/20/2007)
According to PST staff I spoke with, the non-Pro version is only meant for those who really are down to their last dollar, everyone else is just supposed to put up the extra money for Pro

Although price point and budget play into the justification a lab may choose a particular edition over another, that is only one portion.  Labs should feel confident in either edition of E-Prime 2.0 that they choose.  Labs should not feel that they are receiving an inferior or "lite" product by not choosing E-Prime 2.0 Professional.  All editions of E-Prime 2.0 are being offered as an upgrade/enhancement/extension to the E-Prime 1.x family end users have been using for years.  The current ratio of sales is aprx 60% to 40% in favor of E-Prime 2.0 Professional.
