Most of the laptops now being bought do not have a serial port as part of the hardware. Fortunately, our local electronics shop sells Nikkai USB-Serial cables at a reasonable price (<$15), and they are based round the Prolific chipset.
Unfortunately, as described in the support query regarding these interfaces, by default they are assigned to COM5. Now, it's not too tricky for folk with a modicum of experience with WinXP to re-assign the port to COM1, which all our development machines use.
Unfortunately though, we are not allowed to issue laptops to users and give them Administrative, or Power User, permissions, and so the users cannot re-assign the com port to COM1 when out on fieldwork.
Does anyone know of anyway to force the assignment of the COM port with a script or similar, or are there any dedicated USB connecting button boxes that we could use?
