All,

This is turning into a saga. We have a new Siemens MR scanner with a "MAGNETOM Option fMRI Trigger Convertor."

It takes a fiber optic input from the scanner and converts it into electrical output over

1. BNC connection/TTL
and
2. Serial port (RS-232)

either using:

impulse mode - the electrical signal ;length corresponds to the length of the optical trigger signal

toggle mode - an optical trigger signal changes the state of the electrical signal from high to low or from low to high

I'm trying to interface EITHER mode with E-prime and have been unable to get E-prime to react to it on COM2 (or any COM port I specify).

The RS-232 is a 9-pin SUB-D socket with only pins 5 and 6 connected. 5 is ground, 6 is DSR (Data Set Ready - the trigger signal) and 7 is RTS (Request to Send).

With the same setup and port I have gotten a SRBOX to function properly.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you very much!

If you are using the BNC/TTL, you will need to connect to a parallel port.  Depending on the information being sent this may be your best option as it could provide the easist design path once you the trigger to be seen.

If you are using the RS-232 serial option, then I would recommend the use of a null modem cable/adapter as it will ensure the pins are being assigned (or hardwired) to the appropriate positions.  You might want to consider using hyperterminal on one PC and ensure that you are receiving/sending the serial communication you expect before trying this integration (i.e. connect an E-Prime PC to a Hyperterminal PC or the device to a hyperterminal PC).

PMJI, but I have never had much luck using HyperTerminal for this sort of thing, instead I use a piece of shareware called Terminal Plus! which you may find at http://www.geocities.com/terminalplus/index.html.
