Thank you for sharing your experiences of continued trouble with the Sound timed out problem in the latest release of EP2 so as to keep us users informed. You should also know that PST staff rarely participates in this Forum, so you should also bring this directly to the attention of Web Support at http://support.pstnet.com/e%2Dprime/support/login.asp.

I too had this problem. It seems to be the new way EGI sync's up NetStation's and Eprime's clocks. One of my labs has the external clock and this problem does not occur. But at my other lab, where there is no external clock, I got this error. However when I disabled the syncing (by editing ERun.ini file) the problem went away. I know this may not be feasible for those of you who need sound in your EEG studies, but I thought this might give you a start on how to solve the problem

I'm getting the same error.

I've tried entering the Sound.LoadAffinity attribute, but obviously I'm going about it the wrong way because it's either a) not working or b) giving me errors.

Can someone please explain in more detail how to use this fix?

I'm having this problem as well, and I'm really not understanding how to enter sound.loadaffinity.

Thanks, in advance, for any news/help.

I've found a (sort-of) fix following these instructions posted on another thread:

"Below is a step-by-step list of things to try when experiencing these types of Sound Buffer issues:

1. Make sure you are using the most recent version of E-Prime 2.0. (currently, this is E-Prime 2.0.8.90, and can be downloaded from the Web Support site by navigating to Download > E-Prime > E-Prime 2.0 Release Candidate > and selecting the version [Standard or Professional] which corresponds to the license which you purchased)

2. Make sure all SoundOut objects and SlideSoundOut sub-objects are using the "streaming" buffer mode. This can be set in E-Studio by double-clicking the SoundOut object or SlideSoundOut sub-object and selecting the "General" tab. This tab contains the Buffer Mode drop down selection which should be changed from Buffered to Streaming.

3. be sure to reduce the background applications on your computer. It is fine for E-Prime to send and receive signals with your external devices. However, you should not be running other programs while E-Prime is running. (This could include anti-virus programs or programs in the background that were loaded automatically at startup.) Please see the Knowledge Base article for advice on shutting down these applications: http://www.pstnet.com/support/kb.asp?TopicID=2621. Also, please uncheck any programs that you do not want to start up automatically from the 'Startup' tab in MSCONFIG.

4. Wherever possible, incorporate PreRelease into objects that come before SoundOut or Slides with SlideSoundOut sub-objects to allow for pre-loading of the sound file and decreases in OnsetDelay as well. For more information on using PreRelease, see: http://www.pstnet.com/support/kb.asp?TopicID=2304

5. Please try using Codec Config. Codec Config may improve the performance of your experiment by changing which codecs E-Prime uses for each type of sound file. To set the appropriate codecs for your machine, please click Start > Programs > E-Prime 2.0 > Codec Config. Select "Create Default Mappings" from the Tools menu. If prompted, choose to remove any existing mappings first. Next, select Render File... from the File menu, find one of your sounds, and click Open. If there are no errors (only warnings or success), E-Prime should play the sound effectively.

To maximize the functionality of E-Prime and Codec Config, you should install a comprehensive codec package such as
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm) and
DivX (http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack). Please see our Knowledge Base topic here: http://www.pstnet.com/support/kb.asp?TopicID=3162

6. Try and "recycle" media (sound, image, and movie) objects and Slides which contain these sub-objects as often as possible. By Recycle, I mean using attribute references to change the filename in movies on a trial-by-trial basis instead of creating a new object or sub-object for each different trial to reference a different sound.

7. Please try adding an InLine object to the start of your experiment, and include the following script:

c.SetAttrib "Sound.LoadAffinity", "1"

I hope this information is helpful. If taking these steps does not help, please submit a support request to the Web Support site here: http://www.pstnet.com/support/login.asp"

Now there's a question of WHEN the "timed-out" issue will arise (one may play fine, but the next file may shut down the experiment). I should note that I was able to adjust all of Ryan's instructions EXCEPT #5 since the machines only use E-Run. It should also be noted that I am able to run the experiment perfectly fine on the computer I created it on (please forgive me, I don't know which Windows version it's running), but it's not working on the lab computers that run Windows XP.

Any additional help is absolutely appreciated!

Thanks,
sophia
