Following a set of task instructions, we would like participants to type out a plan of how they are going to go about the task, before they go on to perform it so that we can analyse how their plan affected their task performance. i.e. we would like participants to be able to make a response to a text display in the form of a written paragraph and record this response. Is this something E-Prime can do? If so, how would I go about operationalizing it? Cheers.

Yes, E-Prime can collect long freeform responses.

-Open the properties dialog for the object you wish collect the response for.

-On the Duration/input tab, add a keyboard device, and be sure that it is enabled (box is checked)

-Set the allowable box to include the characters you would like to collect ({ALL} for any, but this can be alphanumeric only etc..)

-Click on the "advanced" button. On the general tab set Max Count to the desired character limit for your response.

-Set "Termination response" to the key you would like to use to submit the response (ie. {ENTER})

-For a long response like this, the response needs to display on screen as the user types. Click on the echo tab, and add an echo for your display.

-Select the echo you just created, and hit edit. From here you can adjust the positioning, size, and other attributes of the text that will be displayed.

-The collection tab can use the default options unless you would like to only collect alphanumeric keys, or disable backspace.

Using this method, the user's response will be logged in the RESP of the stimulus object.

Hope that helps!
